Nature terrain

Upon rummaging through all the old boxes full of terrain made in the 90's, I realized most of the stuff we had back in the day were houses. Rather nice looking ones made from cheap card. But all the hills I had were crap and/or completely different looking from each other. Same thing with trees, as most of them were just big balls of foam rubber painted with green spray. So something had to be done to have a really nice game with all the newly painted miniatures.

I had been planning on scratch building some trees, but now only had two days left before a game (and still lots of miniatures to paint). So I went to the nearest DIY shop (Hobby Point) and bought two of the big yet cheap selections of Noch railway trees. Then disaster struck (or was about to...) when I noticed they weren't able to stand straight without some proper bases. Darn! But hey, glad I had bought a box of 100 poker game tokens from Clas Ohlson for 5€ earlier this year (the are 40mm by the way, so grab those if you're planning on doing an all Terminator army for 40k or something like that). Quick blob of hot glue, and the trees got their bases! Glued some sand on, then let dry. Half an hour well spent.

The next day I finished off the bases by painting some brown paint+PVA mix on any parts the sand didn't cover properly (the poker tokens were still partly visible from beneath it), and sprinkled green flocks on top. 42 very nice looking trees with bases done in an hour. I'll fully recommend this approach. Should have realized it's so simple to have an awesome looking forest already back in the 90's... All those games on the dusty floor... Book piles for hills...

Oh, the hills! Gotta have those too. I grabbed some blue insulation foam leftovers and started carving rough hill shapes out of them with a hot wire cutter. 5 minutes and a broken wire later I decided it was way too slow. So utility knife was utilized. Didn't care about the mess, just slashed out the shapes real quick. A little all purpose filler on top, then paints and sprinkling of flock while the paints were still wet. 8 decent looking hills done fast.

The other scatter terrain was made in the 90's, just flocked them as well to tie in with all the new stuff. The small black-red statue I found from a flea market a while ago. And how about the storage of all these things? Got that figured out also. Had four of these blue sturdy storage boxes under my painting/gaming table. Just had to get rid of all the old garbage in them first. Which was refreshing.
