WIP - Painting the Helbrute, Daemon Prince & Cultists. More work on Chaos Lord & another Helbrute

Last weekend I had a night shift with the nice fellows from the Death Guard.

Primed the Daemon Prince "Pestilence" and Helbrute "EYE" with Matt Black (recesses & lower parts) and Burnt Umber (upper parts). Added in some texture paints. It was the first time I tried the Astrogranite Debris. Very nice bluish grey tone that I later noticed provided very cool shading for the more brown tones elsewhere. The Tierra Earth paint had been diluted a LOT (propably to save the almost dried out bottoms of that bottle), and was sloppily overbrushed for a kind of zenithal highlight effect. Watered down Sepia Game Ink for shading, with heavy drybrushes of Desert Yellow, Khaki & Screaming Skull, concentrating on the edges and highest parts.

Should be mentioned at this point, that I often like to use BIG brushes (as well as old, cheap & crappy ones). Saves time and effort. Looks great.

The to-be-yellow areas were given a coat of Game Ink Amarillo Yellow. I always feel stupid when painting this thin and glossy ink over such dark & dirty areas, but after the other few yellow layers yet to come, it'll be just the look I want to achieve!

Also tried out the Plaguebearer Flesh contrast paint for the base (think it still needs the Castellan Green for a more solid base coat). At this point I Gloss Varnished everything, just to seal & secure things up a bit. The DP always seems to get lifted from the wings, and Helbrute from the banner, so those parts got extra attention.

The Chaos Lord got a gong & couple of bells to makes some revolting noise with. More Green Stuff work on the "VOID" Helbrute. Tried out some base positionings for them as well. Not sure if VOID should stand straigth or lean way too much on one side or the other. Kind of nice to have it struggling to keep balance.

The "EYE" & "Pestilence" then had an extra recess shading with a mixture of Blue Tone, Pale Grey Wash, Black Wash, Dark Tone & dirty water to contrast with the brown and yellow tones on the models. I really like the effect.

This morning I got an hour to spare, so put some thinned down Castellan Green on the bases.

AND it just might be that this friday it's time for some good old NECROMUNDA. YAY!!! So I dug up some random Chaos Cultist / ganger models I had converted, primed and partially washed earlier. Most were done this year, but the Kerrunch Elf a bit earlier, and the two flail weaving guys maybe 15 years ago. Other based on an old Elf, and the other on a Confrontation Scavvy. Gave them the Yellow Ink & few contrast paints to act as base colours. They'll be playing the double role as a Necromunda gang & Death Guard Cultists.

"VOID" - Death Guard Helbrute WIP

Second one from the forthcoming trio of lascannon wielding Helbrutes. In addition to the lumbering and ponderous bulkiness of the Nurgle infested Helbrute, I wanted to have thin and long arms waving sickly in the air, barely able to hold its powerful weapons. Like a rotten beetle stuck in a pile of shit with some dried grasshopper legs stuck in its foul mouth.

I had also thought about carving the Helbrutes hull empty in the middle and trying something interesting with that. But only after seeing a very good friends inspiring and awesome art exhibition called VOID earlier this year things started to come together, and the seeds were planted for the creation of this Helbrute, "VOID".

"The EYE" - Death Guard Helbrute WIP

Bought a converted Helbrute from somebody on the internet earlier this year. It was a rather nice modification with a troll head and twin helbrute fists with heavy flamers. BUT the traditional/original sideways tilted pose of the 'brute wasn't altered at all, and I just couldn't think about having a lumbering and rotten Death Guard Helbrute dancing around the battlefields in such a silly posture. So I tore the model to pieces, inverted the legs around and lowered the fist arm.

I had already decided upon building a total of THREE different Helbrutes with twin lascannons to provide some serious threat for enemy tanks and other big nasties. I hesitated between a few different old lascannon versions (didn't have any newer ones available), and as they were all pretty small I decided to have a go and assemble the lascannons from the scratch myself with some plastic tubes. The big eye is just a token from some kids game. Did some Green Stuff sculpting as well. I really enjoy doing these kinds of mutated tentacly growths. What else? Skaven banner with extra skulls and bells. Big rocks hot glued to the base for some serious weight. Business as usual.

Death Guard Terminator Lord WIP

There is a need for a proper Death Guard Lord, clad in rotten Terminator armour. Ready to help with the "re-roll 1's on the hit rolls" aura. Propably pointing finger and giving orders in the middle of the forthcoming THREE Helbrutes with twin lascannons...

Death Guard Daemon Prince WIP

Wanted to have a proper Death Guard Daemon Prince with wings, so searched through the bits boxes and found this nice Ogre Chieftain from Reaper Bones series. Cut off face & arms and stuck some toy wings on the back. New arms from the Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures Treant. Skull for a face. Slimy trails from thin copper wire. Made little plastic "hooks" on the base first, so I could wrap the wires around them easily. Super glue, hot glue and PVA messed in for more slimy effect. Very simple Green Stuff sculpting to cover gaps and add texture on a few spots. Molten plastic beads on the base. Just... LOVELY!!!
